From The Peacemaker's Manual

A peacemaker holds in the Self
the difference of the parties
being reconciled.  The peacemaker
absorbs the difference, embracing
the parties, bringing them together, opposites
facing each other, their opposition discharged into
the peacemaker calmly sparking.

This is what it means, To Stand in the Gap.

Peacemaking is a dangerous calling.
I say "calling" because no one in their right mind
would elect to do this.

The most important thing for the peacemaker
is how to get rid of the sparks.
It is best to go to Mother as her skin is
the crust that binds all peoples.

Find a member of the Standing Tribes.
The tree should be such that it is large enough
to wrap your full body around it.  Do this,
allowing the sparks to drain out of your body
and into the tree.  Mother will take over from here,
drawing the sparks down the trunk, through the roots,
and into her heart where she mediates all things.

This is the genesis of the painting:  While talking to a friend on the telephone I began an "unconscious" painting.  What seemed to be taking-shape was an abstract of a Hebrew candlestick, with a central flame rising above the rest.

The next call I received was from another friend who asked me if I heard the news:  Rabin had been assassinated.  I looked at the painting, the central flame, and it felt to me it was Rabin's spirit rising.  He had given his life for peace.  I remembered his words during the famous gathering in Washington where he shook hands with Yassur Arafat; how hard it was for him, he said, to take this step, being a soldier all his life.  They were such humble words; and he paid for them with his dearest blood.
